The Oluns were far shorter even than the Orzecans, whom outsiders called Dwarves.

They once lived happily throughout O'dyllita, feeding on tree roots buried in the mud. But under the rule of Belshuan, who led the Ancient Kingdom of Orzeca into its golden age, and the witch Hexa Moa, who supported him, they were driven into a barren, rocky land where little sunlight reached. The Orzecans looked down upon the small and powerless Oluns. In time, contempt turned to persecution, and persecution at last drew blood. When Kzarka, the God of Hope, was born from Quturan, the Divine Tree born of Mother's blood, Mother was forgotten.

At sunrise and sunset each day, the Orzecans offered wine to the god who wore an angel's mask. The wagons bearing it always rattled through barren Olun's Valley on their way to the temple. Its fragrance was said to be as sweet as honey that invited deep sleep, yet none but the God of Hope ever drank it. In time, the temple they served burned down, and no one came to Olun's Valley anymore. At last, the Oluns had a chance to flee to freedom, yet the last nine young survivors did not leave.

Instead, they sought the Dark Goddess, known in their tongue as the Thornwood Goddess, and knelt in prayer for seven days and nights. Then, one dawn, the young ones vanished, and a stone golem of peerless size and strength emerged from the shadows into the sunlight.

The golem was surely the Oluns reborn through Mother's blessing. The Oluns had been unable to escape Orzeca because of the Orzeca Lightstone, which was created through the power of Quturan, the tree that had given birth to Kzarka, an Orzecan relic born from the corruption of Mother's knowledge.

The Lightstone absorbed the light that warmed the heart: happiness, freedom, love, faith, and more. Deprived of that light, the Oluns lost their will, allowing the Orzecans to control them with ease. But the golem born from the nine young stars took the crystallized light absorbed by the Lightstone into his heart. The Ahib named him the Warder of Anguish, and his heart Olun's Heart.
