Chapter 14: The Nature of Deadly Poison

United in purpose, the traveler, Dolswe, the crown prince, and Seungsan decided to piece together the information the traveler and Dolswe had gathered during their adventures in Hwanghae Province.

Dolswe was convinced that the king had been poisoned. In the Land of the Morning Light, there was a procedure where food was tasted beforehand to check for poison. However, Jang Daeseung, the highest-ranking official, was the only person who could meet the king alone at any time. This allowed him to skip the procedure and serve poisoned food. Even if it had been performed, Jang Daeseung, who had unrestricted access to the ice storage, could have hidden the poison in the ice. The food would seem safe during the inspection, but as the ice melted over time, the poison would seep into the food.

However, the king passed away long after meeting Jang Daeseung, making the inspection process irrelevant. The critical question was whether there existed a poison that would take a long time to manifest its deadly effects. The traveler recounted the incident at Bae Muryong's residence involving Eunsil.

Like the king, Eunsil died long after being poisoned, and her corpse turned black. While solving the Janghwa and Hongryeon case, the traveler and Dolswe discovered that the new poison was a mixture of two extremely potent poisons. The clever Seungsan quickly grasped the principle upon hearing this. When two poisons with opposite properties enter the body and fight each other, the weaker one gradually breaks down, delaying the onset of symptoms.

The king exhibited typical symptoms of wolfsbane poisoning. So, one of the two poisons was certainly wolfsbane. But what was the other? The traveler brought up the story of Seodong from the Centipede Market, who supplied poison to Bukpo. Seodong, skilled in handling poisons as a healer and adept at cooking fish, could easily refine swellfish poison and supply it to the Centipede Market. Upon hearing this, Seungsan confirmed that wolfsbane and swellfish poison were indeed opposites.
