You actually need to get a Red Tree Lump. I got this by lumbering a pine tree.

I was able to grab a Red Tree Lump from the stack I have in my bank and turn it in to update the quest. Unfortunately there is a second part that requires you to obtain one by gathering. I was able to get one after about 15 minutes of gathering birch.
