Nobody knows for sure why, but people began playing the flute to keep rats at bay. Surprisingly, the origins of this practice may all be based on the tale of a child who loved rats.

This child chased, fed, and even washed adorable little street rats. One day he discovered a white rat that he simply had to have. He gave chase to it all day without any luck. Not being able to find it again (and having fallen in love like never before), the kid started playing a flute, which attracted rats in the town to him one by one. Forlorn, and desperate to find his lost love, the child played and played, walking throughout the town, until he finally came upon the apple of his eye, the magnificent white rat.
