Chapter 7: Brynhild's True Intentions

Brynhild said she would hold Grey back and told me to take Markthanan's flint.

But just then, the Golden Dragon's daughter suddenly burst in, throwing the battle into chaos. Amid the smoke, the Black Dragon unleashed his breath.

When the smoke cleared, Markthanan stood before us in human form. But it was not truly Markthanan. Lord Grey had taken control of his body.

I barely managed to drive Grey out, but Markthanan was overcome by despair and rage after harming his own daughter. He finally lost all reason.

The black energy seized its chance and swallowed him whole. Markthanan returned to his true form as a massive Black Dragon, and his twisted fury soon turned toward me.

After a long battle, the staggering dragon prepared one final attack. Before he could unleash it, I pierced his heart and took the flint.

The Black Spirit said one of its kind who had possessed Markthanan felt strangely familiar. It had never seen them before, yet somehow it did not feel like a first encounter.

Leaving that question unanswered, I went over to Brynhild, who lay fallen.

I asked what kind of deal she had made with Grey. It was the answer she had kept from me throughout our journey through the castle.

Grey had agreed to lure me into a dead end, where Brynhild planned to strike while my guard was down. But Agnete's sudden appearance had thrown their plan into disarray.

I thought back over everything that had happened while traveling with Brynhild, and only then did I understand the intentions hidden behind it all.

When I asked what she would do now, she told me her life was fading.

Before I left, she asked me to end it with my own hands...

I refused.

Brynhild told me where I could temper the imperfect heart: in the altar flame at the top of the castle. She also gave me a key to use if I found the way locked.

She said she would remain there and rest while the last of her father's warmth still lingered.

With that, I left for the altar.
