Pendant que le magnifique récif de corail perdait complètement sa couleur, la zone environnante souffrait d'une sorte de désertification. Les poissons cessèrent de se réunir ici et les algues disparurent. Les pêcheurs considérèrent cette situation comme des signes de mauvais augure et commencèrent à comparer cette zone à un cimetière.
