- Description:
In the hallowed halls of the royal court, Second Deputy Minister Seonwoo Myeongdeok rose to address the matter of the late king's posthumous title. "The late king once humbly declared, "I have no merits; let me be remembered simply as King Mo, just another king, a hundred years hence." Such humility only magnifies his virtues, making "In"—meaning benevolence—a fitting title."
Yet, First Deputy Minister Jang Daeseung stood firm in opposition. "The late king's reign was marked by profound reformation and the quelling of chaos through martial prowess. His achievements are so grand and his legacy so magnificent that mere words cannot capture their essence. He fortified the very foundation of our nation, leading to the prosperity we now cherish. Thus, the title "Yeong," meaning exceptional, is most appropriate."
The king, weighing their words, finally spoke. "I too favor the character "Yeong." Let this be the posthumous title."
Despite Seonwoo Myeongdeok's fervent appeals, the title "Yeongjong" was decreed. Jang Daeseung and his supporters then submitted a petition, asserting the correctness of "Yeong" and demanding punishment for those who had advocated for "In."
In a display of royal ire, the king rebuked them. "I have heard all counsel and made my decision. Why should the ministers be punished for their opinions?" In a dramatic turn, Jang Daeseung and his allies resigned en masse in protest, leaving the court in turmoil.
