Chapter 1: Shadows of the Sanctuary

A sudden commotion echoed through the hall, drawing every gaze to a trio standing at its heart—a woman, her bearing hinting at distant Valencia; a Hashashin of the sanctuary, armored and vigilant; and Orwen, watching them with eyes heavy with concern.

Orwen spoke softly, revealing the woman's tale: her child, not yet ten days old, had just been born when the father was summoned to the battlefield. He was no warrior, but a humble supplier—yet something had changed, and now he was called to war.

"Wait, you're not sending my husband out there as some kind of meat shield just because he's a Darkheart, are you?!"

Darkheart? The term was unfamiliar, its meaning lost in the tension. Why was the Hashashin so visibly startled, and what was this talk of discrimination?

"Ah... it's a derogatory term for people like me, born from parents of different races."

Across the continent, such words lingered on many tongues. To call a person by such a name... The weight of it was clear in Orwen's troubled gaze. Yet, thankfully, she seemed unfazed.

The woman's husband was to be sent to Tenebraum. With the scouting party missing, it seemed we would have to travel there ourselves.

"Our little one... finally born after so many struggles... I was terrified of becoming a widow, but—thank you. Thank you so much, Edana."

Once the woman had left, I asked the Hashashin why the situation was so dire. He explained that a massive explosion had shaken Tenebraum not long ago. Most of the scouts dispatched had vanished, and now even civilians were being called to aid.

His voice trembled, betraying the pressure of Bahram's command.
