Chapter 1: An Impossible Relationship

Long, long ago, in the days when tigers smoked pipes, there lived a fisher named Sulbaga in the land of Hwaliran in Gyerim. One day, Sulbaga went to Seorabeol to sell his goods, and his eyes met those of Princess Gumodu, who was resting in a high pavilion. Sulbaga fell in love with the princess at first sight.

Returning to Hwaliran, Sulbaga called out to the princess every day, confessing his love to the sky. The villagers, seeing this, tormented Sulbaga, calling him a madman for defiling the princess' name. But Sulbaga did not stop. As days and months passed, he became so lovesick that he couldn't even eat. Unable to bear it, Sulbaga's mother tried to reason with him,

"You are a commoner, and the princess is of noble birth. It cannot be."
"My heart is so earnest that I cannot forget her for even a moment. If my wish is not fulfilled, I cannot go on living."

Seeing her son wasting away, Sulbaga's mother went to the royal palace, offering fat fish and delicious meat without ever accepting payment. The princess, finding this strange, asked Sulbaga's mother if she wanted something, and the mother requested an audience with the princess, saying,

"I have an only son who has fallen ill with a broken heart because he loves you so deeply. His life is now in danger. I beg you, please have mercy on my son and save his life."

As soon as Princess Gumodu heard the story, she realized it was Sulbaga. The princess, too, had fallen in love with Sulbaga's handsome appearance at first sight.

"On the full moon day next month, be behind the statue in the Sky Altar."
