Can confirm that it is harpoonable in every sea zone that is not Ross or further north. Keep in mind that you sometimes can't harpoon because you're too close to shore or bugged char. Check the dura consumption of the harpoon to see if it works. Only other ppl can visually see if your char is bugged (glitching back and forth). Then you need to go char select and back. Is it necessary to use fishing boat when I want to harpoon?

Many times i can't harpoon due to ocean waves being so large i clip through the fishing boat. Going to character select and then back almost always fixes that. Now that said, i can't find the Sperm Whale anywhere. It's not on Famme's map. I have tried Arsha sea as posted here. I have also tried Ross Sea and Epheria Sea as well as Ahrmo sea in that screenshot from Xenogames. In all the time i had done Harpooning for other quests i had never gotten one either. I have never seen a NA screenshot or video of a Sperm Whale and i play on the NA servers.

It appears that you can harpoon them easily just south west of Kuit/Padix island. Apparently can make a good session on 20 of them there.

Also, update from July 2023 : spot between Illya and Ajir island still works but it took me an hour with 1300+ mastery

I hate it so much. It took me 194 times of harpooning, 2 real days non-stop. Like a job. I even catched Gardaka's map ( 0.06% ).

I would recommend keeping mastery at 199-700
There is no point in pushing it past 1200.
I spent 3 hours.

As of today 23rd of November 2025 , I have attempted to do the Fishing leap quest [Fishing Leap Artisan 10] A fishing Master. I started on 21st of November afternoon and have fished a total of 15 hours in the location shown in previous comments.

I have harpooned over 600 times, since the game logs the fishes caught i have done the rough math.
The spermwhale didn't drop once. I actually got Black Spotted Dolphin which is just about as rare based on drop%.
I was getting annoyed by the sickening amount of harpooning i've done so i decided to give it a try somewhere else. Based on BDOlytics map, it should drop pretty much anywhere from Port Epheria island waters up to Valencia islands waters.
I decided to try with the Padix location from comments from earlier and to my surprise, it dropped there in just 4 harpoon attempts.

Caution, the item has very low drop rate 0.45%. Which means you could, on average harpoon for 220 times before you even get 1 drop. I was likely just lucky (if we could call my previous 600-700 hapoons lucky). But it 100% can drop by Padix, in between Daton and Teste Islands to be exact. West of Padix.

Also, here's a picture of the exact location where I was sitting. One picture is zoomed in to max so it helps you figure the spot i was in without much hassle.
It's basically the middle point between the two islands. If you align the picture with your ingame map you'll just click in the middle and you'll be exactly where I was (just in case the spot matters this much, but i think it doesn't really).



Some tips for this -
1. Use blue grade harpoon (i don't know if it matters but i assume it does)
2. Stop the boat completely (make sure it doesn't slowly drift away) , Harpooning seems to be tile based and if the boat is still pushing forward after stopping (which can sometimes happen) it affects your drops.
3. Position the boat sideways towards the waves. I don't know if this matters either, but might as well do it because others believe it does and with 0.4% chance to drop the damn thing i'm not gonna waste more time because of something like this.
