The recoil that sent a jolt through his arm. Then, at some point, his vision went black. That was the last thing he remembered. When he opened his eyes again, he was in the custody of the New Victoria authorities. A milkman had smelled blood and alerted the authorities. Everything that happened that day was reduced to a few lines on a handful of papers. Armed robbery. Suspect deceased. Case closed without prosecution. Edward asked about his sister again and again, but the answer never changed. Three bodies had been found at the scene, along with one survivor: Edward Henry Canary.
