I'm sure you've figured this out already, but for anyone else...
I used the blackstone on the wrong item, so I was panicking. BUT! Just forfeit the quest, and pick it back up from your shadow buddy. He should give you another black stone.

It's part of a beginner black spirit quest, just keep playing and you'll get through to the Ultimate Basteer [WeaponType] as a final reward.
Edit: You keep the stone after the quest, but enhancing the subweapon doesn't increase anything and the +1 Basteer subweapon "Cannot be enhanced."
